1. Who we are
DigitalUnlock (“we”, “us”, “our”) designs, builds, hosts and maintains websites for businesses. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy.
If you have any questions about this policy or how we use your information, email us at our support email.
2. Information we collect
When you contact us or fill in a form on our website, we collect the details you choose to give us. This includes your name, business name, email address, phone number, the town or area you cover, your type of business and anything you write in your message.
When you become a customer, we also collect:
- the content you send us for your website, such as text, photos, logos and business details;
- billing details needed to set up your subscription (card payments are handled by Stripe and we never see or store your full card details);
- records of our emails and conversations with you;
- information needed to set up your business email account and domain name.
When you visit our website, our hosting provider may automatically log technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit. This is used to keep the website running securely.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- reply to your enquiry and talk to you about building your website;
- design, build, host and maintain your website and business email;
- take payments and manage your subscription;
- send you important messages about your service, such as changes to our terms or prices;
- keep our website and services secure and prevent fraud or misuse;
- meet our legal and accounting obligations.
We do not send marketing emails unless you have agreed to receive them, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
4. Our legal reasons for using your information
Under UK data protection law, we must have a lawful basis for using your personal information. We rely on:
- Contract: where we need your information to provide the services you have asked for, or to take steps at your request before entering into a contract, such as replying to your enquiry.
- Legitimate interests: where it is reasonably necessary to run our business, for example keeping our website secure, improving our services and keeping records of our conversations. We only do this where it does not override your rights.
- Legal obligation: where we must keep information to meet our legal duties, such as tax and accounting records.
- Consent: where you have agreed to something, such as receiving marketing emails. You can withdraw your consent at any time.
6. International transfers
Some of our service providers, such as FormSubmit, Stripe and Google, may store or process information outside the UK. Where this happens, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as UK adequacy regulations or approved standard contractual clauses, so your information is protected to UK standards.
7. How long we keep your information
- Enquiries: if you contact us but do not become a customer, we keep your enquiry for up to 12 months, then delete it.
- Customers: we keep your details for as long as you are a customer. After that, we keep records needed for tax and accounting for up to 6 years, as the law requires.
- Websites and email: when your subscription ends, we may permanently delete your website, email accounts and content 30 days later, as explained in our Terms of Service.
9. Your customers’ information
When we host a website for your business, you are responsible for the personal information your own visitors and customers submit through it, such as enquiry forms. In that case you are the data controller and we act as your data processor, handling that information only to host and maintain your website and only on your instructions. You are responsible for having your own privacy policy where the law requires one.
10. How we keep your information safe
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including secure (SSL) connections, access controls and reputable service providers. No method of sending or storing information online is completely secure, but we work hard to protect it.
11. Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your information;
- ask us to limit how we use your information;
- object to us using your information based on legitimate interests;
- ask us to send your information to another organisation in a common format;
- withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on consent.
Some of these rights only apply in certain situations. To use any of them, email our support email. We will reply within one month, and there is normally no charge.
12. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have used your information, please contact us first and we will do our best to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113.
13. Age
Our services are for businesses and are not intended for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated. If we make important changes that affect our customers, we will let you know by email.
